MTV Made Me Think, For Once
As I sit here on my bed watching television, I have come to realize a couple of things. The first thing that I realized tonight was done so by watching a show on MTV called “The X Effect”. It’s a show where two exes bring their new significant others and they spend a romantic evening in order to see if they still have feelings for one another. The thing is that their current boyfriend/girlfriend get to spy in on them throughout the entire weekend. I guess the thing that bothers me the most is that they are set up for failure from the get go. The two couples are brought to a place where they think that they are going to have a meal together. All four of them. Then they are wisked away and they are put in a situation that most would fall.
What kind of entertainment is this? I know that it isn’t the first time in pop culture where high and mighty execs put people in comprimising situations for the entertainment value. I mean, look at the Romans. The Colloseum wasn’t built to grow flower gardens in. This sort of entertainment not only devalues the human persona, but I believe that it belittles the viewer even more. What happened to being entertained by thinking? Let’s say, a radio show. A family would gather around the radio to listen to a mystery drama show. You’d have to think up images of what you are hearing in your head. That’s good entertainment. I gotta say, The Prairie Home Companion is one of my favorite saturday afternoon activities.
Which brings me to my next realization. I need to read more. Not only books like “The Catcher In The Rye”, although I love JD Salinger, or The Left Behind series, but the Bible too. I used to love to read! Now I waste my day hitting the refresh button on Howard Forums or playing World of Warcraft. It’s probably good for the brain. That’s what the doctors say, anyway.

I cannot agree more, young Christopher. Reading and thinking are going out of style- especially reading in an actual book. I quite honestly usually read the Bible on the computer because it is easier, I can find things more quickly. I can read a commentary on any chapter or verse. However, there is nothing like sitting in a comfy chair and dedicating my time to reading the Bible. I will certainly sit in prayer for longer and think about what I have read. It takes more thought and commitment and I need to do it. So, thanks for your call to action.
